Danae, daughter of Acrisius, king of Argos, becomes a central figure in Greek mythology because of an oracle prophecy: Danae's son will cause Acrisius' death. The core of Danae's story is her encounter with Zeus. The god, enchanted by her beauty, transforms himself into a shower of gold to join her, resulting in the birth of Perseus.
